    • Designed, created and implemented a corporate development program that identifies high potential employees. The program provides executive leadership/development to promote personal growth while developing leaders who are capable of serving the corporation in senior management positions and in its acquisitions.
    • Leadership Program group designed and developed new compensation programs for drivers.
    • Leadership Program group created an acquisition strategy that is capable of integrating acquired companies into the existing corporate culture.
    • Success of the initial program convinced senior management to create a long term management development program.
  • Consultation with several HMO providers and other practice management issues.

Major Accomplishments

  • Served as a member of the board of  SC Fuels, Clarient,  California Stem Cell(now Neostem), U.S. Tech Services, American Career College, Portico, and Therapy Solutions
  • Served as expert witness for cases involving the health care industry, including Meyer v HPN, resulting in one of the largest judgments in the health care industry
  • Created consulting company to advise managed health care plans

1997 – 1998: Executive Consultant, Public Affairs

Major Accomplishments

  • Worked with Public Affairs department and Senior Management to tailor corporate/industry message to legislators and senior government officials.
  • Built network of working physicians willing to visit, write letters and speak about benefits of managed care to elected officials on national and state basis.
  • Maintained and developed working relationships with elected officials statewide and nationally to mitigate negative public relations.

Pacificare Health Systems

Assumed top management position of largest business unit in PacifiCare Health Systems to provide vision and overall direction for company operation and profitability, as well as for the well being of over 4000 employees. Managed Western Region including Oregon and Washington sales, operations, management and profitability.

Major Accomplishments

  • Generated 73% of all PBIT in 17-year history of company prior to acquisition of FHP in 1997.
  • Successfully integrated FHP employees and organization into PacifiCare within one year of takeover while earning 340 million dollars of PBIT.
  • Developed senior management talent for corporate including in last senior management group 3 individuals promoted to CEO/Regional VP, 3 individuals to Corporate Senior Vice President and 3 individuals to Corporate Vice President.
  • Grew total health plan membership by 30% in each of first two years.
  • Increased gross revenue over 74% during the years FY 1995 and FY 1996.
  • Decreased MLR from 87.4% to 84.4% in FY 1995, 84.4% FY96, 83.9% in FY97

Major Accomplishments

  • Moved company from a FY 1990 pretax loss of $3.2 million to profitability in two quarters.
  • Maintained profitability every quarter while in leadership of the plan.
  • Created joint venture medical groups, building 12 groups in 2 ½ years, which serve over 50,000 members.
  • Initiated training and development programs that ensured the financial stability and long-term growth of the company.  Increased revenues from $50 million to $200 million while supervising over 180 persons in managed care company and 300 persons in joint venture medical groups.
  • Positioned company to win San Antonio’s Philanthropic Corporation of the Year Award in 1993.

Humana Health Care Plans of Colorado

Major Accomplishments

  • Changed pretax $818,000 loss in FY 1988 to pretax $334,000 profit in FY 1989.
  • Increased premium revenue from $3.1 million to $5.45 million in one fiscal year.
  • Reduced administrative overhead by 12% during FY 1989.

Metlife Healthcare Network of Colorado, Inc.

Major Accomplishments

  • Initiated start-up for Colorado, including Denver and Boulder
  • Designed and implemented marketing plan, including sales goals, fiscal budget and operation of staff of 18.
  • Enrolled 23,000 members in 22 months.
  • Established loss ratio of +87% on entire book of business.

Spectrum Emergency Care, Inc.

1976 – 1985: Vice President

Over nine years experience with the nation’s largest Emergency Department physician staffing company.  Extensive hospital and physician contract negotiating experience.  Held management positions in both operations and sales.  Exceeded goals in nine consecutive years.
