As the former President and Chief Executive Officer of PacifiCare of California, I was the senior most manager of the largest business unit of PacifiCare Health Systems. This business unit had sales of over $6 Billion annually serving 2.2 million persons including 400,000 over the age of 65 (Medicare risk). Supervising over 4,000 employees in multiple locations throughout California, as well as overseeing the acquisition of FHP Inc. in 1996-1997 gave me experience in the large scale management of a Fortune 200 sized organization.

During my 23 year corporate career, I served as President, CEO or Executive Director for eleven years. In the subsequent 24 years, I have lead my own consulting company working with some of this country’s top medical specialty groups, family practice groups, HMOs, PPOs, and traditional health insurance companies.
My experience in the healthcare field is extremely broad; having built medical groups, directed service area expansions, integrated acquisitions, created training for all employees and developed leadership talent, and dealt with policy makers at the local, state and federal level. Working with large national employers as well as local, state and federal governments provided insight into how huge institutions compared, purchased, used and crafted employee benefit plans.
My experience includes contract negotiations, developing strategies for growth and development, marketing, sales, operations, member services, physician contracts, hospital contracting and finance. In day to day operations, I was involved extensively with many divergent groups in developing strategies for growth and development, additionally supervising many departmental functions including sales and marketing, operations, member services finance, human resources and training.

I am generally familiar with managed care and traditional insurance practices as well as day to day operations of all aspects of this country’s healthcare system. As a former senior executive, I am very familiar with how large companies are run and have excellent insight in to the decision making process at an executive level.
Additionally, I have worked in public policy serving as a board member of the California Chamber of Commerce, the California Association of HMOs and a wide variety of academic and charitable organizations exposing me to many of the leaders of healthcare in America.
I utilize this experience for my clients in a variety of ways. Whether it is in consultation for strategic planning in physician practices to navigate the new waters of Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or in testimony for trials involving healthcare and health insurance issues, I diligently represent the interests of my client. I do think there is a right and a wrong answer. And, I think there is, for the most part, objective evidence to support the definition of right.
